The reason why you shouldn't write sapiens is because its not the correct name, its only half the name. Homo-sapiens and Sapiens both refer to the same thing so it would technically still be correct if you wrote Sapiens. But since its science we are doing here, we must be as much accurate as we can. For example, the scientific name for lion is Panthera leo whereas the scientific name for a tiger is Panthera tigris. If you just refer to them both as "panthera" there would be confusion. In fact, there is actually a whole set of rules on how we should write the scientific names of species, This is why you should always write the full name of any scientific species name. Your teacher may accept "Sapiens" or may not, but I am pretty sure you shouldn't write Sapiens instead of Homo-sapiens according to CBSE.  I don't know about other boards. Its just better to write the full name because its not really hard and if you go to professional examinations such as board exams, I am one hundred percent sure you will lose a mark if you put Sapiens instead of Homo-sapiens.
