Given: Ray of light takes t1 and t2 Times in two media of absolute refractive indices μ1 and μ2 respectively.

To find: Ratio of refractive indices?

Solution:

  • Now we know that:

             μ = c/V

             μ = c/(d/t)

             μ = cd/t

  • Where μ is absolute refractive index c is speed of light, t is time of light travelling and d is distance travelled by light.
  • This concludes that μ is directly proportional to time.
  • So, μ1 / μ2 = c x t1/d /  c x t2/d

             μ1 / μ2 = t1 / t2

Answer:

          So the ratio of refractive indices are μ1 / μ2 = t1 / t2.
