The math here is luckily pretty easy. If the map has one unit, that represents 12 units in real life. In other words, for every 1 inch on the map, there are 12 inches in real life. And 12 inches represents 1 foot!
So you're really multiplying the map's size by 12.
So let's say instead of 1 inch, you have 2.5 inches. Since the real world is just the map size times 12, we multiply 2.5 x 12 which gives us 30. Now we can separate this into feet and inches, giving us 2 feet 6 inches or 2.5 feet. Or we can just realize that since we're multiplying by 12, we're essentially multiplying 2.5 times 1 foot! So we have 2.5 feet.
