Given,

A sprinkler waters 1/14 part of a lawn in 1/2 hour.

To find,

The total time that the sprinkler will take to water the complete lawn.

Solution,

We can easily solve this mathematical problem by using the normal arithmetic method.

Let, the total lawn = 1 part

(This assumption will help us to do the further mathematical calculations.)

Now,

The sprinkler waters 1/14 of the lawn in = 1/2 hours

The sprinkler waters 1 of the lawn in = 1/2 ÷ 1/14 = 1/2 × 14 = 7 hours

Hence, the sprinkler will take 7 hours in total.

SOLUTION

GIVEN

If a sprinkler waters 1/14 of a lawn in 1/2 hour

TO DETERMINE

The time it will take to water the entire lawn

EVALUATION

SOLVE USING RULES OF THREE

Here it is given that a sprinkler waters 1/14 of a lawn in 1/2 hour

We write the given problem in the table as below :

 \sf{Total  \: water  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:   \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: \:  \:  \: Time \:  Required}

 \displaystyle \sf{ \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \frac{1}{14}  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:   \:  \frac{1}{2} }

 \displaystyle \sf{ \: \:  \:   \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: 1 \:  \:   \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: ?}

Here the total amount of Water and the time required are in direct proportion

As the amount of Water increase the time will also increase

Hence the required time

  \displaystyle\sf{ =  \frac{1}{2}  \times  \frac{1}{ \frac{1}{14} } } \:  \:  \: hour

  \displaystyle\sf{ =  \frac{1}{2}  \times 14 } \:  \:  \: hour

  \displaystyle\sf{ =7 } \:  \:  \: hour
