If a stationary bus suddenly speed up passengers are thrown in backward direction why does it happens

Inside the bus the passengers are in a state of rest with respect to each other.When the bus speeds up with abrupt force the passengers oposses the motion and tend to remain in the state of rest due to inertia of rest and thereby thrown backwards.
