if a stationary bus suddenly speeds up , passengers are thrown in the backward diretion

it is because of second law of motion which is based on inertia.it say that if the object is at rest then it will tend to be at rest and if it is in motion then it will continue to be in motion...

similarly,When the bus moves, your body due to inertia tends ito remain in the same position. So you feel the backward motion. Similarly when the bus stops, your body( part of it which is free to move) continues to move and you tend to lurch forward.
