If a train runs at 60 km/hr it is late by 15 minutes and if it runs at 85 km/hr it is late by only 4 minutes, then the distance to be covered by the train is 37.4 km.

Step-by-step explanation:

It is given that,

When the speed of train is 60 km/hr, it is late by 15 minutes or \frac{15}{60} hr.

And, when the speed of train is 85 km/hr, it is late by 4 minutes or \frac{4}{60} hr.

Let the distance covered by the train be “d” km at time 't' hr.

Here, we have a difference in the time of reaching the destination i.e.,

\frac{15}{60} \frac{4}{60} = \frac{11}{60} hr.

The required formula:

Time = \frac{Distance}{Speed}

So, based on the formula and the data given in the question we can write the eq, as,

\frac{d}{60}\frac{d}{85}  = \frac{11}{60}

\frac{85d - 60d}{60*85} = \frac{11}{60}

\frac{25d}{60*85} = \frac{11}{60}

⇒ d = \frac{11*85}{25}

d = 37.4 km

Thus, the distance covered by the train is 37.4 km.
