a ∝ b³

i.e., a = kb³ ……. (i)

Also, we have,

For a = 40.5 and b = 3

Substituting the values in (i)

40.5 = k × (3)³

⇒ k = 40.5 / 27

k = 1.5  

Now,  

When a = 12 (given) and substituting the value of a and k in (i), we get

12 = 1.5 × b³

⇒ b³ = 12/1.5

⇒ b³ = 8

⇒ b³ = 2³

b = 2
