It is because, Viruses do not have a metabolism or require anything to exist. They do not grow or develop.
Viruses reproduce after infecting and taking over other cells, effectively hijacking the cells machinery to replicate the virus and then disperse.
So, the flaw in being able to grow on its own ia not finding nutrienta but finding a host. If the virus is floating in the air, perhaps it will be inhaled and find a nice cell to infect from the respiratory system of a creature.
As a side note, the idea that a virus is alive is a bit debated. They cannot repriduce by themselves, grow, metabolize things, perform cellular respiration, or do muchof anything.
Yet they are able to use other host cells to reproduce, and they contain DNA or RNA to hold their genetic information. They are a bit weird.
Hope it will help..

Viruses can't grow when they are outside they just look like a salt crystal after they enter into the organism then they multiply they are hence called the link between living and non living organism the word virus means poison
