Given info : a wire of 440 m length is moulded in the form of a circle and a square turn by turn.

To find : the ratio of the area of circle to that of square is ...

solution : case 1 : when wire is moulded in the form of a circle.

circumference of circle = length of wire

⇒2πr = 440 m

⇒2 × 22/7 × r = 440

⇒r = 70 m

area of circle = πr² = 22/7 × 70 × 70

= 22 × 10 × 70

= 15400 m²

case 2 : when wire is moulded in the form of square.

perimeter of square = length of wire

⇒4 × side length = 440 m

⇒side length = 110 m

area of square = (side length)² = (110 m)²

= 12100 m²

the ratio of area of the circle to that of square = (15400 m²)/(12100 m²)

= 154/121

= 14/11

Therefore the ratio of area of the circle to that of the square is 14 : 11
