 {a}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{ {a}^{2} }  = 14 \\

adding 2 both sides

 {a}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{ {a}^{2} }  + 2 = 16 \\  \\ ( {a +  \frac{1}{a} })^{2}  = 16 \\  \\ a +  \frac{1}{a}  = 4

cubing both sides
