Correct Question :-

If a² - 3a + 1 = 0, find the value of a² - 1/a².

Answer :-

a² - 1/a² = 3√5

Solution :-

First find the value of a + 1/a

a² - 3a + 1 = 0

⇒ a² - 3a = - 1

⇒ a(a - 3) = -1

⇒ a - 3 = - 1/a

⇒ a - 3 + 1/a = 0

⇒ a + 1/a = 3.....(1)

Find the value of a - 1/a

From

(a + 1/a)² - (a - 1/a)² = 4

Here

a + 1/a = 3

By substituting the values

⇒ (3)² - (a - 1/a)² = 4

⇒ 9 - (a - 1/a)² = 4

⇒ - (a - 1/a)² = 4 - 9

⇒ - (a - 1/a)² = - 5

⇒ (a - 1/a)² = - ( - 5)

⇒ (a - 1/a)² = 5

⇒ a - 1/a = √5.....(2)

From (1) and (2)

⇒ (a + 1/a)(a - 1/a) = 3(√5)

⇒ (a + 1/a)(a - 1/a) = 3(√5)

⇒ (a + 1/a)(a - 1/a) = 3√5

⇒ (a)² - (1/a)² = 3√5

[Since (x + y)(x - y) = x² - y²]

⇒ a² - 1²/a² = 3√5

⇒ a² - 1/a² = 3√5

Therefore the value of a² - 1/a² = 3√5

Identity used :-

• (a + b)² = a² + b² + 2ab

• (a + 1/a)² - (a - 1/a)² = 4

• (x + y)(x - y) = x² - y²
