Here I am explaining with taking the 5N force towards the left direction a d the 15 N force to the right. If you decide as convention for right side being positive then you can also represent the forces as +15N and -5N.

Now ,

resultant force =net force

=15+(-5)

=10N

As we know that force is a vector quantity, the direction must be specified....but in this case we've taken the right side as positive so answer remains 10N.

Also remember the right side has a standard convention of positive.
