let's assume a body dropped from some height

the distance traveled by it in 1 sec will be

s= ut +½at²

s= ½(9.8)(1²)

s= 4.9m

.....

but here it is said to take the acceleration as unity(=1unit)

so again calculating the distance traveled by body in 1 sec

s=ut+½at²

s= ½(1)(1²)

s= 1/2 units

so this ½ unit Distance is equal to 4.9m(as calculated earlier)

so one unit of length will be = 9.8m
