The acceleration in uniform circular motion is due to centripetal force. And has magnitude = (v*v) /r . ... And yes that acceleration is not useless , it is there to change the direction of body , so velocity doesn't remain constant . And the speed remain constant , because there is no tangential force acting on the body..
