Step-by-step explanation:

In p(x)=x²+x-1,    a=1, b=1, c=-1

α+β=-b/a= -1/1= -1  ⇒eq. 1

αβ=c/a=-1/1= -1   ⇒eq. 2

(α+β)²=α²+2αβ+β²

α²+β²=(α+β)²-2αβ

Substituting eq. 1 and eq. 2,

α²+β²=-1²-2×-1

        =1+2=3
