Given equation is

 {x}^{2}  - x - 6 = 0

If we factorize, we get

 {x}^{2}  + 2x - 3x - 6 = 0

Taking common we get

x(x + 2) - 3(x + 2) = 0

so, we get

(x + 2)(x - 3) = 0

Separating the terms , we get

x + 2 = 0 \:  \: or \: x - 3 = 0

so the final answers are

x =  - 2 \:  \: or \:  \: 3

let

 \alpha  =  - 2 \:  and  beta  = 3 \\ we \: get \:  \\  - 2 - 3 =  - 5

If

 \alpha  = 3 \: and  \: beta  =  - 2 \\ we \: get \\ 3 - ( - 2) = 5
