If an inlet pipe can fill a tank in 4 hours and an outlet pipe can empty the full tank in 5 hours, then what is the portion of the tank filled in 1 hour if both the pipes are kept open?​

Given :- If an inlet pipe can fill a tank in 4 hours and an outlet pipe can empty the full tank in 5 hours, then what is the portion of the tank filled in 1 hour if both the pipes are kept open ?

Solution :-

→ In 4 hours inlet pipe fill = 1 tank

so,

→ In 1 hour inlet pipe will fill = (1/4) of tank .

similarly,

→ In 5 hours outlet pipe empty = 1 tank

so,

→ In 1 hour outlet pipe will empty = (1/5) of tank .

then,

→ Both will fill in 1 hour = (1/4) - (1/5) = (5 - 4) /20 = (1/20) portion of the tank .
