GIVEN :

An integer p is divided by -4, then the quotient is 8. And also given that 8 is divided by another integer q, then the quotient is -4.

TO FIND :

The quotient when p is divided by q where p and q are integers.

SOLUTION :

Given that an integer p is divided by -4, the quotient is 8.

It can be written by using Division Algorithm as below:

\frac{p}{-4}=8\hfill (1) (here dividend=p , divisor=-4 , quotient=8 and remainder=0)

(∵ by Division Algorithm

Dividend=quotient\times divisor+remainder)

Also given that 8 is divided by another integer q, the quotient is -4.

It can be written by using Division Algorithm as below:

\frac{8}{q}=-4\hfill (2) (here dividend=8 , divisor=q , quotient=-4 and remainder=0)

(∵ by Division Algorithm

Dividend=quotient\times divisor+remainder)

From the equation (1),

\frac{p}{-4}=8

p=8\times (-4)

p=-32\hfill (3)

From the equation (2),

\frac{8}{q}=-4

8=-4\times (q)

Rewritting the above equation,

-4\times (q)=8

q=\frac{8}{-4}

q=-2\hfill (4)

Now from the given when p is divided by q  can be written as,

That is divide the equation (3) by (4) we get,

\frac{p}{q}=\frac{-32}{-2}

=16

\frac{p}{q}=16

∴ the quotient when p is divided by q is 16.
