if an item costs $800 after a 20 percent discount,what was the amount of the discount?

we know that x - 20%x is 800$

(100x-20x)/100=800
80x=80000
x=80000/80
x = 1000

therefore, orignal price is 1000$
CP-D=SP
1000-D=800
D is -200 $

i.e. 200 $
