If an object of mass 2kg travelling with 2m/s strikes a wall and rebounds back with same speed then calculate magnitude of change in momentum.

Answer:

Let the object strikes the wall at an angle θ.

Momentum when object hits ball is p1=mvsinθi^−mvcosθj^

when it rebounds at same speed & same angle, p2=mvsinθi^+mvcosθj^

Change in momentum =p2−p1

=mvsinθi^+mvcosθj^−(mvsinθi^−mvcosθj^)

Δp=2mvcosθj^

j^ is the unit vector along y− direction.

Magnitude of Δp=2mvcosθ
