So, before answering this question ask yourself - What do you think is holding the leaves apart?
It is a charge, equal across all the metal leaves which holds them apart. So, if you touch a 'charged' metal rod to it, you allow the charge to spread across the much larger metal rod, becoming essentially zero on the leaves. So the leaves ‘collapse’.
