if any random compound is given to me how do i differentiate whether its a ionic or covalent bond?

I've been given some homework in chemistry and I'm not sure how to tell if a compound or ion is an ionic covalent or polar covalent bond I also

- If the compound is made up of just two element where one is metal and the other non metal then it is most likely to be a ionic compound .
- If the compound is of identical ( same ) elements then it is covalent ( eg : O2 , Cl2 ).
- if both the elements of which the compound is made up of is non metal the also it is covalent.
- Hydrocarbons are all covalent compounds
- ( ALL TETRAVALENT ELEMENTS form ionic bonds ) .
