if any random compound is given to me how do i differentiate whether its a ionic or covalent bond? ​

  • If the compound is made up of just two element where one is metal and the other non metal then it is most likely to be a ionic compound .
  • If the compound is of identical ( same ) elements then it is covalent ( eg : O2 , Cl2 ).
  • if both the elements of which the compound is made up of is non metal the also it is covalent.
  • Hydrocarbons are all covalent compounds
  • ( ALL TETRAVALENT ELEMENTS form ionic bonds ) .
