Given

The magnitude of 2i + yj + 3k = 5.

To Find

The value of y.

Solution

► For magnitude, we know :-

◘ Magnitude = √(sum of the squares of the coefficients of i, j and k)

⇒ Magnitude = √(2² + y² + 3²)

⇒ 5 = √(4 + y² + 9)

⇒ 5 = √(13 + y²)

► Squaring both sides :-

⇒ 25 = 13 + y²

⇒ y² = 25 - 13

⇒ y² = 12

⇒ y = √12

⇒ y = √(3 × 4)

⇒ y = 2√3

Therefore, the value of y is 2√3.
