a and b be the roots of the equation 2x^2–4x-3 = 0, then the value of a^2+b^2?

2x^2–4x-3 = 0, or

x^2 - (4/2)x - (3/2) = 0, or

x^2 -2x -(3/2) = 0

The product of the roots = -(3/2) and the sum of the roots = -2

Hence, ab = -(3/2) …(1)

a+b = -2 …(2)

Square (2) to get

a^2+2ab+b^2 = 4, or

a^2+b^2 = 4–2ab = 4 -[-2*1.5] = 4+3 = 7gg b
