If blackholes've the proclivity to not to allow light to pass through them then how've scientists discovered them?

scientists observed the the behaviour of stars around the black hole (i.e the star around black hole orbit it and are pulled closer to the black hole) and they can find the presence by different rays like gamma rays ,x rays and the density of black hole as it's density is very huge
