When atoms of different electronegativity combines then more electronegative atom attract shared pair of electrons towards itself and polarization of charge takes place so atom with more electronegativity gains slightly negative charge and atoms with less electronegativity attains slightly positive charge and therefore ionic bond takes place between two oppositely charged ions.
Whereas in the covalent bond electrons remains in between the nuclei of the two atoms. Covalent character comes mainly due to the sharing of the electrons between the two nearly same electronegative non metal atoms.

it is a special type of covalent bond between two atoms by which the atom which is more electronegative attracts more electrons from the bonded pair than the other atom.
