==> cos a + cos² a = 1

==> cos a + 1 - sin² a = 1

==> cos a = sin² a ....(1)

Square both sides:

==> cos² a = sin⁴ a ...(2)

Adding (1) and (2)

=> cos a + cos² a = sin² + sin⁴ a

=> sin² + sin⁴ a = 1 { given, cos a + cos² a = 1 }

Hence,

=>> sin² a + sin⁴ a = 1
