Step-by-step explanation:

cos x = a/b

We know cos x = Base / Hypotenuse

So, Base = a

and Hypotenuse = b

Let perpendicular be y

Hypotenuse = √ y^2 + a^2 = b

y^2 + a^2 = b^2

y^2 = b^2 - a^2

 {y }^{2}  =   {b}^{2}  -  {a }^{2} \\ y \:  = \:  \sqrt{ {b \:  }^{2} }  -  {a}^{2}

tan x = perpendiular / base

tan x = (√b^2 - a^2 ) / a

Hope it helps u..
