Given

  • cov (x,y) is negative

To find

  • the relation between variables X and y

Solution

we are provided that the covariance of two variables x and y is negative. we know that,

correlation coefficient is given by,

r = cov(x,y)/[sd(x).sd(y)]

since, standard deviation cannot be negative and it is given the covariance is negative, r would become negative.

Therefore, (assuming that r is negative one) the variable x would decrease as the variable y would increase.ie, they shall obey inverse relation.
