Given: critical angle for total internal reflection for a substance = 60° .
Find: the polarizing angle for this substance.
Solution:
- Let the polarizing angle is theta , θ .
- As we know the critical angle is the angle of incidence, for which the angle of refraction is 90°. If light enters a denser medium from a comparatively rarer medium, then the direction of light changes and the light ray bends towards the normal.
- So , for this the formula is tan θ = 1/ sinc
- where, the c is critical angle.
- Now , for finding the polarizing angle we have to put the value of critical angle in the above formula .
- So, tan θ = 1/sinc
tan θ = 1/ sin 60°
tan θ = 2/√3 (sin60° = √3/2)
θ = 49°10'.
- So , the polarizing angle for this substance is 49°10'.
