Given: critical angle for total internal reflection for a substance = 60° .

Find: the polarizing angle for this substance.

Solution:

  • Let the polarizing angle is theta , θ .

  • As we know the critical angle is the angle of incidence, for which the angle of refraction is 90°. If light enters a denser medium from a comparatively rarer medium, then the direction of light changes and the light ray bends towards the normal.

  • So , for this the formula is tan θ = 1/ sinc

  • where, the c is critical angle.

  • Now , for finding the polarizing angle we have to put the value of critical angle in the above formula .

  • So, tan θ = 1/sinc

tan θ = 1/ sin 60°

tan θ = 2/√3 (sin60° = √3/2)

θ = 49°10'.

  • So , the polarizing angle for this substance is 49°10'.
