The ratio of the volume of voids to the volume of solids/ aggregates is called void ratio.

e = Vv/Vs

Where Vv is the volume of the voids (water voids and air voids), and Vs is the volume of soil or aggregate.

Void ratio is related to soil porosity or packing density (n) , which is defined as the ratio of the volume of voids to the total volume of the soil or aggregate. The relation is given as,

e = n /(1-n)      and      n = e / (1+e)

Compaction directly affects the value of void ratio.
