2nd period: 2s, 2p

no. of orbitals in 2s= 1 (use formula 2l+1)

no. of orbitals in 2p= 3

Total no of orbitals= 1+3=4

Given that, one orbital can hold a maximum no of 3 electrons

Therefore, 4 orbitals can hold = 4 X 3 = 12 orbitals

Answer : 12 electrons
