Step-by-step explanation:

Let the side of original square be x units.

Therefore,

Area of original sqaure =  x^2.... (1)

On increasing the side of square by 50%

New length of side

 =x+50\% \: of \:x\\</p><p>=x +0.5x\\</p><p>=1.05x

New area of square

= (1.05x)^2\\</p><p>=1.1025x^2.....(2)

Dividing (2) by (1)

Ratio of areas of new square to original square

 =\frac{1.1025x^2}{x^2}\\</p><p>= \frac{11025}{10000}\\</p><p>= \frac{25\times 441}{25\times400} \\</p><p>= \frac{441}{400}\\</p><p>= 441 : 400
