Let the side of the square be x. The area of the square, obviously, is x^2. When the side of the square is increased by 75%, the (new) side is 1.75x. Now the area of (new) square is 1.75*1.75*x^2 = 3.0625*x^2.

So, you see the area changes from x^2 to 3.0625x^2. Thus the increase in area is 3.0625*x^2 - x^2 = 2.0625*x^2. Therefore, In terms of % the increase is 206.25%.
