Given info : if electron makes a transition from 3rd orbit to 1st orbit in H atom, the wave number of photon for this transition is xR/y.

We have to find the value of |y - x|

Solution : from Rydberg's equation,

1/λ = RZ²[1/n₁² - 1/n₂²]

here n₁ = 1 , n₂ = 3 , Z = 1 ( for H - atom)

so, 1/λ = R(1)² [1/1² - 1/3²]

= R[1 - 1/9]

= 8R/9

we know, wave number is the reciprocal of wavelength.

so, wave number = xR/y = 8R/9

⇒x = 8 and y = 9

Therefore the value of |y - x| = |9 - 8| = 1
