Two options.

Either in the beginning there was God, or in the beginning there was matter.

This question is essentially a posture of faith.

As many have indicated, matter and energy are interchangeable at the quantum level. There are interesting posits by science that may be able to encapsulate the current variety of the various energy types and values in our universe. Fundamentally, however, your question cannot be answered.

So I leave that up to whatever part of you believes.
