You said the half of the equation. "Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed but it can be converted from one form to the other and not necessarily be reversible".
so for fossil fuels if they are exhausted they are mostly converted to heat, light and sound energies which are expelled to the nature and can't return.
so we need to worry about our energy resources.
