On adding excess fertiliser, it may lead to eutrophication. When excess of it is added then, it infiltrates into the ground and mixes with ground water. this ground water then enters ponds or lakes. It provides nutrients to algae and bacteria which start growing on the top of the surface of water body. This prevents the entry of sunlight and also uses up the oxygen present in the water in the process. This effects the aquatic life and aquatic plants and they die in huge numbers. Water also gets polluted.
