If F = 40 N and M = 1.5 kg, what is the tension in the string connecting M and 2M? Assume that all surfaces are frictionless.

The two masses M and 2M are connected by a string so the tension in the strings will be the same which is T.

So, we can write two equations such as Ma= T - Mg and 2Ma = F-T.

Hence, by substituting the values we will get 2(T - Mg) = F - T or we can also write that as 3T = F + 2Mg where we have to substitute the values of g as 9.8m/s^2 F=40N and the value of M as 1.5Kg.

T=(40 + 2*1.5*9.8)/3 which on solving we will get the value of T to be 23.13.
