∇f(x) = 1

Given :

f(x) = x , h = 1

To find :

The value of ∇f(x)

Solution :

Step 1 of 2 :

Find f(x - h)

Here it is given that

f(x) = x , h = 1

Thus we get

f(x - h)

= f(x - 1)

= x - 1

Step 2 of 2 :

Find the value of ∇f(x)

The backward difference ∇f(x)

= f(x) - f(x - h)

= f(x) - f(x - 1)

= x - ( x - 1 )

= x - x + 1

= 1

Correct question : If f(x) = x , h = 1 then the value of ∇f(x) is
