Rose petals, hibiscus and turmeric are known as natural acid-base indicators.

Hibiscus and rose petals are red or pink in colour, so they are slightly acidic or alkaline in nature, they change their colour when a substance of opposite pH is mixed.

They can help indicate bases.

Turmeric on the other hand remains yellow in most cases and will change it's colour to red when low pH substances are added.

Turmeric can be used to test the basic solutions.

Explanation:

  • Turmeric includes a yellow dye and changes into red color when it is mixed with the base solution.
  • When the hibiscus petals are dipped into the acid solutions then, the solution will turn into a dark pink color thereby telling that the solution is acid and one can identify that the specific solution is acidic in nature.
  • The rose petals can be used to test the solution whether it is acidic or basic by boiling the petals in the hot water.
  • Then the boiled pigmented solution can be used to test whether the solution is acid or a base.
