Water is a compound and Compounds always have properties different from their constituent Elements. Oxygen and Hydrogen are Elements and have individual properties but when they combine and form a bond their properties become different.

as the chemial formula of WATER is H2O which means that water is made up of 2 atoms of hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen................they combine with each other because every gas wanna be noble.....i.e they want their shells to be filled FULLY......and thus, water is a compound it can resist the properties of their parent material........
