If you ever find yourself lost in a jungle, there are means and ways for you to get out safely. Here are some tips that you can use.

1. Check your orientation. The first thing you should do is gather your bearings and find out where you are and where you need to go. Find a sizeable clearing and determine the direction of the sun. The sun rises from the East and sets in the West (mostly) as we all know and the sun can also guide us home.

2. Find a path. Many jungles have some sort of human activity in one form or another and these people would often leave trail marks and even clear footpaths. Follow these if they head towards the same direction you’re going. This will make finding your way home easier. If push comes to shove, follow a brook, stream or river. These would usually lead into the sea or a larger body of water that will have some form of civilization.

3. Get stoned. One of the things we see in the movies is people coming around the same point of reference over and over again. This has a little chance of happening in real life but it can happen. To avoid this, place stone marks in every turn you make or wrap and piece of cloth around a tree branch for every important stop. This will help you determine if you’ve gone the same way already or not. Look out for similar markings as well as they can help you get out faster.

4. Rest. The most important part. You don’t have to rush getting out of the jungle. Rest when you can. It is important to have a reserve of energy when you need it the most.

If you are deep in the jungle, it may take days for you to get out and here are some things you can do to survive:

1. Find water. Jungles are teeming with different water sources but be careful of ponds or brooks that have a high population of mosquitoes or wild animals as they can do you more harm than good.

2. Find food. There are plenty of foods in a jungle, as long as you know where to find them. Foraging comes in handy in these cases as foraging teaches you which plant is safe to eat and which one you should not lay a hand on.

3. Find shelter. Temporary shelters can be in the form of small caves, a grove of trees, and a singular tree with a large branch you can climb and sleep on. This is important as you need to build up energy to keep moving.

4. Build a fire. Fires can keep wild animals at bay, especially at night. Just make sure that it does not get out of control.

5. Defend yourself. Sharpen long sticks to serve as spears and javelins. These will help you fend off wild animals and keep you safe.
