- Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of India's highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra, in 1950. He was only 24 years old at the time.
- Despite a broken arm, Major Somnath fought bravely. He led his battalion to Budgam in Kashmir in October 1947 to thwart the Pakistani infiltration and lost his life. His last message to Brigade Headquarters was: "The enemy is only 50 meters from us."
- We are heavily outnumbered. We are under devastating fire. I will not back down an inch but fight to the last man and the last round."
- Major Somnath Sharma was born on January 31, 1923, in the Kangra district of Dads in Himachal Pradesh (then Punjab province). He was a member of a military family in which every member of his family, such as his father, Major General Amar Nath Sharma, his brothers, Lt. Gen. Surender Nath Sharma and General Vishwa Nath Sharma, and his sister, Major Kamla Tewari, a doctor, served in the army.
- He studied at Sherwood College, Nainital, and at the age of 10, enrolled at the Prince of Wales Royal Military College, Dehradun. He later entered the Royal Military Academy.
- He began his military career on 22 February 1942 when he was drafted into the 8th Battalion, 19th Hyderabad Regiment and later joined the 4th Battalion, Kumaon Regiment, British Indian Army. He belonged to the same regiment his maternal uncle, Captain Krishna Dutt Vasudeva, had served.
- Major Somnath Sharma fought in many battles, but one of the most notable was World War II under Colonel K. S. Thimmayya's command in Burma with the British Army. In the first post, it was used on Arakan and has proven itself. In Arakan, fighting the Japanese, one of the soldiers was wounded.
- Despite the enemy fire, he carried the wounded soldier to safety over his shoulder. He also received a 'Dispatch Mention' for this brave act.
