if i kick a fat man and a thin man from the 10th floor who will fall faster
Answers
Explanation:
One of Newton’s observations was that weight does not affect how fast you fall. Well, at least in a vacuum. The reason a feather falls more slowly than a bowling ball is because of air resistance. Put them both in a vacuum and they fall at exactly the same speed. For an example of this, watch Brian Cox visits the world's biggest vacuum chamber - Human Universe: Episode 4 Preview - BBC Two . The surface area of a fat man is not going to be that much greater than the skinny man. So unless they are falling in different positions it’s going to be about the same.
However … when the parachute opens things get a little more interesting, and I don’t know the math well enough to tell you. A parachute works basically by increasing the air resistance because as you fall you need to push more air molecules out of the way.
At that point, a heavier person (not necessarily fatter) will fall a little more quickly because they will start to resemble the feather and bowling ball in a normal atmosphere - because now you have two objects with the same surface area but the heavier one is going to push the air molecules out of the way more quickly.
