Explanation:

When we use white light in place of monochromatic light then only central fringe looks white and other fringes of different colour are observed. It is becaused central fringe for all the colours are formed at central point so it becomes white after mixiing up.

I hope it helps u

If instead of monochromatic light, white light is used then the changes in the observation will be:

  • The central maxima will be of white in colour.
  • The bright fringes will be colourful.
  • The colour of the first maxima will be violet.
  • The most far maxima from the central fringe will be red in colour.

As we know, Young's Double slit experiment needs coherent sources of light, so if use use white light instead of monochromatic light, the white light will split in all its wavelengths.

  • In the case of central fringe, all the wavelengths will superimpose on each other and it will look white.
  • If the maxima is at y distance from the central fringe, y = nλD/d, Here, λ = the wavelength of the light used, D = distance from the slit to fringe, d= separation between the slits, n= number of maxima

                       As, y ∝ λ

So, the light having less wavelength will be at less distance from the central fringe.

So, The first maxima will be violet in colour.
