- Russia is a beautiful country spanning from Europe to the East of Asia. Russia is directly on the North of India. It is across the Himalayas and Kashmir, but a little far away.

During the cold war after World war II between allies of Soviet Union and allies of
USA & NATO , India remained a good friend of USSR. It was for military
assistance, economic partnership, strategic and diplomatic relations. People of
India enjoyed friendly relations and visits bilaterally.

India is close to Russia geographically. Also India gets an advantageous relation with
Russia as the neighbor China is not so friendly. To keep China & Pakistan
away, India needs a friendly Russia.

India needs Russia’s cooperation in international organizations such as UNO. China,
Pakistan, USA, UK and other countries may
not support India. Usually Russia does.

India and Russia cooperate on politics, defense, nuclear energy (plants &
technology), anti-terrorism activity and finally Space. Recently India has
increased its relationship with NASA in space. However, the relationship with
Russia remains. India periodically buys war tanks, missile, war planes from
Russia. Ministers from both sides visit periodically the other country.

In the next 8 years the bilateral trade is expected to be around 30 billion US dollars.
India exports to and imports a lot of

Indo Russian Inter-Governmental Commission
maintains the governmental relations between India and Russia. Economic relations are handled by Indo-Russian
forum on Trade and Investment, the India-Russia Trade Investment and technology
promotion council (IRTITP), India Russia Chamber of Commerce (IRCoC), India
Russia Business Council and India Russia Trade Organization.

PM Modi visited Russia in May 2017. Even during the duration when USSR was split into many countries and Russia in Europe, India supported USSR.

India and Russia are setting up joint ventures to develop and produce 5th Generation
Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) and Multirole Transport Aircraft (MTA). India will build (HAL) Sukhoi SU-30 MKI fighter
planes. India and Russia do joint military exercises every two years. ONGC
executes oil and gas projects in Russia. It has 1.7 US billion dollars
investment there.

The route for transport is called the North-South transport Corridor on road, rail
and sea. There is a route from Bombay to Baku via Bandar Abbas. Another from
Mumbai to Astrakhan via Bandar Abbas and Tehran.

between the two countries. There are a lot of Indian students in Russia studying graduation and post graduation. There are a number of Indians settled in Russia and have gone on jobs.
