if a light is refracting from a denser to rarer medium then it will bend away from the normal for example when a Ray of light passes from water which is denser to Air which is rare the light travels away from the normal

it is the rule of refraction that whenever a light travels from rarer to denser medium the light will bends towards the normal and vice versa . also this bending happens because of the difference in the speed of light of various media for example the speed of light in air is 2.9 970 into 10 to the power 8 M per second while that in water is 2.25 into 10 to the power 8 M per second . speed of light in vacuum is 2.9979 into 10 to the power 8 M per second
