If light travels a distance x in t₁ seconds in air and 5x distance in t2 seconds in a medium, then the refractive index of medium is​

In air, velocity of light( v1) = displacement/ time taken= x/ t1

In the unknown medium, velocity of light( v2)= 5x/ t2

Now, we know that v is inversely proportional to refractive index( r). Also, note that refractive index of air( r1)= 1.

Let the required refractive index be r2.

Therefore, v1/v2= r2/r1

Or             x/t1 *t2/5x= r2/ r1

Or            t2/ 5t1= r2/1

Or             r2= t2/5t1
